Oceanic: Queering the Ocean

Oceanic

A multidisciplinary climate artwork that includes a short film, a mobile app, and an installation at the Leslie Lohman Museum in New York City. The project combines dance, volumetric video, and theoretical texts by feminist scholar Gloria Anzaldúa to reflect on personal, collective, and environmental grief and to stitch the line from colonization to neoliberalism to racial capitalism. “Oceanic” is a collaboration between micha cárdenas, Gerald Casel, Cynthia Ling Lee, Susana Ruiz, Huy Truong, Anna Friz, and Ian Costello.

Excerpt from the short film “Oceanic: Queering the Ocean.” The film presents audiences with an experience of the coast of the Pacific Ocean at Natural Bridges State Beach, with an original soundtrack and a series of performances that tell the story of how climate change is a racial justice issue. The film includes words from Chicana feminist Gloria Anzaldúa, who wrote about this specific beach to think through solidarity across identities in women of color feminism, such as the former exclusion of trans women, which she tried to undo.

The work was exhibited at the Leslie Lohman Museum in New York City. It featured the “Oceanic, Portal” mobile app and a series of new large-scale photographs custom-printed for display on the museum’s windows capturing dancers as they teleport between Natural Bridges and the museum in Soho. The installation invited viewers to create space for healing and transformation, emphasizing the importance of centering one another’s access needs as we build worlds together. Curated by Stamatina Gregory, the openingincluded a performance by electronic music artist Gavilán Rayna Russom. The installation was featured in Hyperallergic as part of its essential guide to summer exhibitions in New York.
“Oceanic: Queering the Ocean” premiered as part of the event Infinite Points on a Circle at the Toronto International Film Festival Lightbox (TIFF), curated by Syrus Marcus Ware.
